Cruel, Deceiving and "Elected" Dictators of Today

Some countries are trapped with leaders who wear a democratic mask to the world but have become truly megalomaniac dictators.

These sometimes “elected dictators” have gotten so much power (control over electoral institutions, national assemblies, supreme courts, media outlets, public services and the like) that it has become impossible to depose them.

Political and economic impotence is the common feeling...

  2. Hi Alicia,

Here in the pictures you have posted, Pol Pot, known as Brother Number One, was a notorious leader who killed more than 1.7 million Cambodian people. Remaining senior leaders are now being brought to justice. The dark history of this crimes has been included in high school education so as to equip them with more understanding of the past history.

The world should at peace at all times. Personally, I hope to see change in the leadership of my country leaders who, as you said, wear the mask of democracy but have tendency toward dictatorship.

  3. Hi Alicia,

sadly we, in Venezuela, are trapped with a dictator using a mask of democracy. Human Rights are being violated every day and nobody do anything to change it. We can manifestate our dislike to this government and to everything they're doing but any change seems to happen. Venezuela is divided in social classes thanks to this president that in all his speeches continue to incentivate the hate against the rich people. The government has many deaths in his hands and political imprisoners, that attempts to democracy and to human rights. I really hope that all this stop more sooner than later, because later could really destroy our country.

He is folowing Fidel Castro as his personal leadear so he can change Venezuela into Cuba, literally. Chavez has lied to us, broke the law and even control the electoral institucion.

  5. We definitely have an example of that in Venezuela. Hugo Chavez is an elected dictator that pretends to help people, when he doesn’t; that violates Human Rights and even worst who’s following the steps of his idol Fidel Castro.
Our president has got all the power of all the important institutions and public authorities of our country, he can do whatever he wants, close TV channels, radio stations, anything. Plus, the economy in Venezuela is worst every day that pass, every week there are lots of people that die victims of the insecurity. What a better example of that that this past week where students were killed; and of course if people protests they will be also risking their life, what clearly means that we don’t have freedom of speech neither.
So is he really doing something for our country? Is he helping the people? Is he really keeping the promises he made when he was elected? What is he up to by following Fidel Castro’s steps?

  6. Hi Alicia.

Well in Venezuela, we are living that situation. In December of 2009 the citizens of Venezuela had the oportunity to choose our next president, and we are living the consecuenses today. During 10 years of presidential power, Hugo Chavez have done everything he wanted to do, he has a moyority on the national assemblie. This mayority and support give him more power, giving him the possibility of imposing new laws, because if he propose a new law, that assemblie is the one that have the power to apove it or not, and if he have the support of geat quantity of them he will get what he want.

This is one of many other thing that we have to endure like insecurity, inflation, corruption, and others. This seems like its never going to end, in a democracy the people have the right to change between presidents and governments, if this right isn't respected we are not living a democracy.

  10. Hi Alicia.

Under Chavez presidency, Venezuela is a powerful reminder that elections are necessary but not sufficient for democracy.
Chavez is a compelling orator to those whose ideologies prevent them from seeing through Chavez's persuasive rhetoric the persecution that directs his every moves. With the pass of the years a series of laws and measures have been changed, and others created, but the real thing is that all this acts are concentrating the power in just one person, and this is a sing of that Venezuela is turning into a dictatorship. But in meantime, if we still without doing anything about it, dictatorship will take advantage and Venezuela will keep declining as a country.

Now at days Venezuela has a kind of dictador named Hugo Chavez, eventhough he has'nt been declared a dictatorship he follows the steps of Fidel Castro. Also there are a lot of facts that shows that Chavez is a dictator. For example the closure of TV channels, radio stations, and others. Furthermore, if Chavez continues been the president, the insecurity will aument, our economy will be worst and also people of the opposition are not going to be able to express their ideas because freedom of speech is going to be abolished.
In conclusion, should we continue with this country like this or should we do something to improve it?

  12. In this modern world, where population worldwide it’s informed by what has been happening around the world and what dictators have done, it's so hard for governments to impose this kind of regimen since we already know consequences and news are updated for us to know every day. Presidents like Chavez in Venezuela then, try in the beginning to seem like they are democrats. They promise lots of things to the people, and as the time goes by, they start introducing in this case communism, by propaganda on TV, on the streets etc. They try to sell the world another reality of what they really make people live, and they try to take the power in every aspect so people would get fearful , for them to take private property as an example or silent them, and give jobs just to government supporters. Living in Venezuela nowadays is not so easy, as a citizen of this country I feel more scared to go out, because of the high increase of delinquency. Things are getting more expensive every day and the government keeps giving resources to another countries, in my opinion this is just getting more ridiculous to live with and we really need to start loving more this country and acting better as citizens so we can find a light on this huge hollow starting the change in ourselves, so we can retrieve our country.

  22. Hi Everyone,

Here in Venezuela the political system is a complete flaw, we have been deceived in so many ways that people can't understand. This summer I had the opportunity to talk with people born in Cuba, and they are so concerned about what is happening here in Venezuela that you wouldn't imagine. They kept asking me how are we letting Chavez do what Fidel is doing to Cuba. In my own opinion we've been manipulated and biased with the idea of the offering of equal opportunities to everyone, but what's equality? taking away someone's property and giving it some other that may not have the experience or strength to support it, just because the new owner was tagged to be weak. And by owner and property i don't mean something in specific it could be anything from a job spot to a farm. Socialism is good if you know the real meaning of it and how to propagate it, if you don't it becomes the perfect trail to communism.

  23. The situation that the venezuelan people are living nowadays is actually very similar to what you are implying in this post. The former government try to convince people that what they're doing is what is best for Venezuela. But the things that the results are not exactly the best ones. In Venezuela, thanks to the conformism that is growing in the mayority of the venezuelan, the education is decreasing and crimes are increasing. They sell the socialism as if it were the best option to Venezuela, but history has it's own opinion and shows that socialism in the countries that tried to impose it, it hasn't had good results. Every government should try to do what's best to their country, but not try things that damage the country in many different ways.

  24. Today Venezuela is no longer trapped with a leader who wears a democratic mask, as time goes by people are able to see through actions and decisions how the president let the mask drop off. The ideals that once convinced most of the citizens, and all the promises that the president made in his campaign that involves revolutionary measures and benefits and power for the people, now are just empty promises and just words created to maintain an image.
The speech of the president Chavez is totally dedicated to the less benefited sector of our society, and sadly the most ignorant, that always believe in his plans and gives him the opportunity to rule majorities; but no country will survive putting all kind of obstacles for the private industry to improve; giving away tons of money of our resources to allied countries and violated human rights like it is normal. Every day we see another young student died fighting for his rights, another political prisoner for disobey and refuse to make an injustice, another group of people in a hunger strike trying to call the attention of international organisms so they can see what happen in this country and we can receive some help.
It is absurd that today in a globalization era, countries with so much potential and resources as Venezuela are ruled by ignorance and intolerance, and have to live in a divided society in witch the only way to accomplish a goal or have your voice heard is wearing a red t-shirt and follow with no personal opinion the ideas of the cabinet of the president Chavez.

  25. Venezuela is trapped with a leader truly megalomaniac dictator. A dictator that is abble to do whatever he wants because of the control and the power that he has gotten. This is the reason why Venezuela’s population is living a strong political impotence.

Stadistics have shown that more than 50% of the voting population disagrees with the current politics, and that’s a very relevant issue; at the begining the governmet’s leaders wore a democratic mask. However, nowadays they talk a lot about a new kind of social political; they call it 21st century socialism. The truth is that the population doesn't have a completely clear idea of what it is this new policy. To aproach to the unknown generetes a feeling of impotence that increases with the pass of time.

In conclusion, is a fact that more than half of the Venezuela’s voting population disagrees with the current politics, but they can not do nothing because of the control and the power that the governmet has. Finally, the Venezuelans are aproaching with the pass of time of an unknown politics and that’s generetes a strong political impotence.

    ----
Recently i heard a beautiful quote of Voltaire: "I don´t agree with you, but i will fight for your right to say it". That´s democracy...
I still have hope, and its sad to think that way in a great country like Venezuela. Since our actual president is the leader, things are worst every day. I really have to admit that living in Venezuela is sometimes embarassing, and just because of the president. Is hard to live the everyday life, you don´t know if someone is following you, if you or your close ones will be safe when they return home, if a concentration wont affect you, if you will go to jail to express yourself and demand your rights, or if someone will talk for you if one of this things happens.
Fear is what we have. We are lacking in so much things, things that need attention. We don´t even repect and take care of our own culture like other countries, and that is the previous president´s fault, the actual president fault and our fault too.
Leaders need to be the role model of the society, so why he doesn´t help?, he are just enchanted with a bizarre idea of an equal country where everyone is equal -in the poor level-, and he´s just trying to copy others, knowing that those governments didn´t work. He likes to change the history to his way, and manipulate people to think that way too.
He knows the consequenses of his actions if he quit the presidence, that´s why he´s still there, talking for hours. Gaving diplomas to everyone who study medicine in three years, creating ministers like crazy and not turning arround and watching the problems of the society.

We need to keep fighting and leave a little our differences behind. We need to stop being selfish too and stop pretending being blind in front of this situations. This generation is the one that is making the steps, and i hope, nothing like this will happen again. Let´s start with ourselves -venesuelans- before gaving the big step to make what insticts says.

I want to be free too, i´m affected with this whole situation, i´ve cried and left behind some dreams of mine and i love my country, but we need to be clear that when Chavez quits, the country will not be like before like magic. Let´s work hard together and transform this situation. Chavez will be out sooner or later, the only way he can´t control us like puppets is working together.

By closing media, private companies and want to re-elect in the upcoming elections to continue ruling the country looks like he wants to continue in the government of the country. We are living now in a country where human rights don't exist, murder, violence, stealing and so many things happen everyday. So many people despise him for nationalizing some of their lands and industries and have been behind the numerous attempts to oust him. After having seen the way in which freedoms have been curtailed in Venezuela over these many years, it would seem ridiculous to even contend that there might be doubt as to whether Hugo Chavez is a dictator, and he is, he has temporarily suspended Congress more than once and his 2009 referendum victory essentially allows him to be President as long as the people keep electing him. So where's the chance to elect someone new? He pays people only for go to his missions and he makes that people who work in National Companies keep voting for him because if they don't do it, they will lost their job. We're living the dictatorial powers of Hugo Chavez and we hope that everything ends someday in the better way possible.

  44. I'm from Venezuela and we are actually been living under an almost dictatorial government runs by President Hugo Chavez. Chavez has taken control of the press, the media, the Supreme Court and all the electoral institutions; therefore he has won all elections with no problem. Our president is always making promises that at the end he doesn't do and the only thing he has brought to our country is misery; lots of crime and a terrible economic situation. Life right now in Venezuela doesn't worth anything; a lot of people have gone homeless, jobless and those who commit a crime don't receive the punishment they deserve because there is no real authority.

  45. These so-called social leaders [this is how they present themselves] born of the needs that people have that are not satisfied by the government of the day, this is how these leaders come to the scene. With the passing of time these leaders become true dictators who just want to stay in power for their personal gain.

This means that this solution, which the inhabitants of a country believe to find in these social leaders, becomes a major problem since this type of government doesn’t respected the precepts of democracy.

  47. People get what they deserve!

Democratic elected Presidents do not become dictators only because they were predicted to be so.
As it has been demonstrated with previous Dictators’ psychological characteristics, almost all of them have shown a relative complex towards others, that once they are elected, they begin showing their dictator character.
It is true that they are dictators already even before they reach the power.
However, the more cultured and hard worker the population is, the fewer opportunities for them to win in a democratic elections.
These personalities are often good speakers, who involve electors with a lot of hopes.
There, we find the difference! Nowadays, it is not very common to find a Dictator in 1st world nations. Their populations are characterized for being cultured and hard workers people.
Usually Dictators reach the power in those countries were people s are uncultured and/or in deep economical problems, and where its populations find a light of hope in the never ending promises of these personalities.
In other words, dictators are dictators because people that are thirst of solutions see in Dictators words the solutions for their individual problems.

  48. Hugo Chavez is the president of Venezuela, in fact he’s a tyrant disguised in the skin of a “democratic president” who pretends to help people, when he actually does not.
He has two idols, one is the Cuban dictator, Fidel Castro and the other one is the Argentinian Che Guevara, a Cuban Revolution “hero”, and both of them have marked Chavez ideological and political views throughout all of his years as president of Venezuela. During his campaign in front of the Executive Power, exercising as the head of State, many human rights have been trespassed and violated; for example, we do not have freedom of speech which means also that people don’t have any access to information or sometimes they receive a tainted one, also one of the most representative and popular TV channels was closed two years ago for presenting an ensemble of ideas against the Regime established eleven years ago by Hugo Chavez which now must be broadcast on paid television.
More recently he ordered the closure of thirty-four radio stations, once more because these didn’t agree with the socialist and communist ideas of the Government. The closure of the TV channel and radio stations entailed a mass dismiss of employees, who now don’t have a salary, leaving them in a labor void. He also took all the power of most of the public institutions and services, putting in charge incompetent people who are not in capacity to run and handle these very essential organizations.
The insecurity is another problem which is threatening our city and especially our country, we are dying in the streets because of the violence; thieves do not hesitate to kill people for a pair of shoes or a fancy cell phone, but the most worrying thing about this is the impunity around these felonies.
The good thing is that there’s a movement of students who are protesting against the impunity and the insecurity we’re experiencing every day, hopefully their protests and their hard work will land on good soil and change the destiny of this beautiful country.

I dont think we will ever be able to understand why people adored them in such a way in some of the cases, this rare behavior perhaps relies on the fact that people need to believe in something when all hope seems to be completely lost, who is to blame? The dictator or those who led the country reach such a situation that a person like this was able to play with people's minds and take over their thoughts and feelings by promising an impossible reality?. Evil dictators are allowed to come into stage by our own making, we are the ones who let them in by our own messy doing for years and years.

  51. Hi Alicia:
Living in Venezuela, since the last forty years have been "impossible", due to the lack of governments that really care for the development of the nation.
In the last ten years, Venezuela has gone trough a series of changes, leading the country to a complete disaster, we have to analyze that the bad government of Hugo Chavez is not the whole cause of this disaster that we call country. Since we the citizens of Venezuela have a flaw, which is the ignorance. This flaw opens the way to the biggest marketer that human kind will ever see Hugo Chavez, because he not only represents the president of a nation, but the name Hugo Chavez is a brand, it's simple to analyze this in that way because just like a brand it has millions of followers, also he becomes an idol, an icon, and believe it or not the persuasiveness that he as a brand and as a president has, is the most powerful weapon to attack a country filled with ignorant people, therefore we the people, are the first cause of this involution process. So like our liberator Simon Bolivar once said "An ignorant population is the blind instrument of its own destruction", we are blinded by the ignorance and we have lost not only our country but our true essence, allowing the president to do what ever he wants with this piece of land that we call Venezuela.
In conclusion not only a dictator wearing a mask is leading the country to its destruction, also the people are involved in this process.
What do we the people do to change this?
    I personally think nothing.

The Chávez government was voted so this indicates that it was democratic, but over the years this government was getting worse and physically abusing people, including massacres in the opposition marches among others. This president also is leading the Venezuelan people to confront each other. While still stealing money and enjoying traveling abroad, instead of solving the internal problems of the country such as economy and security. In summary, the lower class people who are with Chavez despite living with death and all this suffering and insecurity among others, continues to hear the president's words and believe in him. However the opposition against him, but they are not well organized and doesn’t have a leader or someone respectable and not corrupt, therefore always fail to achieve their goals.

As stated in the post, dictators with democratic mask, those who stay in power by bribing and extorting the public authorities, are in front of the eyes of the international community as legitimate democratic presidents. Hugo Chavez takes advantage from the fact that there is precariously media that is against him to confirm the integrity of freedom of expression, a political opposition that tries to follow the democratic process that eventually wins public offices to confirm the integrity of the Electoral Council and a Justice Court that eventually dictates against Chavez supporters, ratifying this way the autonomy of this organization. All of these, added up to the bribing of the poor countries of the region to keep them on their side, and condemning as Yankee and disqualifying as lackey of the empire whoever don’t share his Socialist ideals, makes the perfect components for the democratic mask that Chavez uses in front of the international community.

Nowadays, Venezuela is facing this exactly situation, the democratic Government of President Hugo Chavez Frias has become everything but not democratic, and we have a sort of facts to support it. In the last elections, Chavez’s competence: Manuel Rosales, having the victory in his hands, quit himself from his candidature when his family was threatened if he doesn’t quit, then Chavez was still president. Before that, in all places of the country, Venezuelans signed a petition for Chavez to leave the presidency of Venezuela; about 95% of the population assisted, but nothing happened, maybe because someone doctored the results or because Chavez nullified the action. Maybe the most outrageous fact is that Chavez’s government started at 1998, and he is still in the power, even though he had to quit in two opportunities. Those tree were the most important facts to believe that Chavez Government is actually a dictatorship, and maybe some people are happy with his president, but the rest of the Venezuelans aren’t, because this government doesn’t resolve the problems that the country is having, and every time that things seems get better, Chavez or his entourage make the things to keep the same; doubtless, we are living a dictatorship masked as a democracy.

We saw how he changed our patriotic symbols, our country name, our constitution, etc, only to achieve a personal goal. Many people thought in1999 that a military man could bring them a better way of life, but today the facts and the history have demonstrated that when a government takes wrong decisions the results are catastrophic. We have lost our democracy and in consequence we will lost our beloved Venezuela. Every day, we sadly see how the selfishness and ambitious of power of only one man snatches our future. We live afraid for our lives, our properties, our families, our jobs, because the president doesn´t want productive people instead, he wants submissive citizens. But we aren't democratic, the whole nation have economical problems because the president give our money to other nations, create hospitals in Cuba when in Venezuela people dies because we don't have a ideal medical system. Now we have a new warning alert, the Chipo, and the government don't do anything about that, only are making rich who are around the president and the president itselve. The president-elect has made various moves to capture all power and rule the country as it sees cause, without considering the consequences and the damage it does to this beautiful land. The division of social classes, that distance with that spread hatred between Venezuelan brothers. The misappropriation of funds, giving Venezuelan capital to other nations for support, when us need the money to build schools, hospitals and move forward. I really do not know who are worse, Chávez or people who support him, because many of us are against his government, but apparently we are not strong enough to oust him and we want to build Venezuela. But the reality is, that we are still repeating those mistakes maybe not identically but similar.

Many things can put a dictator in power, first his personality, always charming and appealing, people can see in him a hero or maybe a god. Second, many years of dissatisfaction by a majority that see in the new leader a solution to all of their problems. And third of all, a crack in the political system of the country. For example in Venezuela, when Chavez run for power, the two mayor party, AD (Social Democracy) and COPEI (Christian Social), had a lot of internal breaks and people didn’t trust them any more so they look for the hero that came from below and wasn’t part of an elite.

Nowadays in Venezuela we are living difficult moments. Our president Hugo Chávez Frias is taking control of everything. When Chávez was elected, all what he presented seemed to be perfect and organized. But afterwards, suddenly he transformed in one of the most terrible persons that this country could ever have. He perpetrated people's civil rights and freedom of speech, suspended the broadcasting of several channels and the most horrible thing, he divided the country in two, where the hate confronts love.I hope that one day Venezuelans will open their eyes and see that they deserve a better person to rule this beautiful country.

As we know, Venezuela is a country with great economical potential but unfortunately our president has not taken advantage of this resource to bring our country forward.

In this moment, i am a college student and i need to say that the Venezuela's Students have a really big responsability in his shoulders because we can not let a group of people led by an evil leader, taking control over us the wrong way take away our rights, our freedom and destroying our future.

I don’t understand why we still committing the same mistake again and again. An evil Pearson is easy to recognize, how we will elect a men that didn’t finish High school or didn’t went to university, how can this be reasonable. We have to be more careful electing the men who is going to rule our country. He have to be intelligent, prepare, educated, conscious about people, about human rights.

I think all evil dictators took control of their countries, because people believe in them, in a change, people believe in the typical speech of a dictator. This government has taken over of many private companies, damaging them and converting them into something irrelevant for our country, only for gets more and more power. Also, Chavez’s government has taken over the control of all institutions which direct institutional powers (Supreme Court, National Assembly, among others). Sadly, at this moment our president has not considered all those resources that Venezuela have, he has made the country worst than ever seen before, wasting working people, money, and those resources like oil for example. Chavez has changed the name to our country, the whole constitution, and a lot of things in our nation. 108. Nowadays this is a reality felt in a lot of countries, for instance Venezuela, with president Chávez. In the last decade, Venezuela has been submerged in a socialism-comunism establishment where it is divided in two, oficialism and oppositors. The oficialism has taken over all the institutions, like de CNE, making the elections a joke for all the citizens, and nationalized a great quantity of companies, damaging the quality of these. It is constantly attacking the media against the process of course, the oppositors, quartering the freedom of the speech. Its principal strategy is to scare people by threatening, mocking the sovereignty, making it hard to get justice and harder to end the government through justice itself; by this I mean that in these totalitarian systems, justice is not a way out since they have the absolute power of the whole political system and they control everything how they want it and when they wish it. What is worst, in a country like ours where we have a lot of richness and money, as long as the government has money and power, as well as the "justice" in their hands, no ethic or moral, only manupulated, blackmail, and mediocrity, there will be Chávez in power for a few more years. This is happening in a lot of contries, this is the case of Venezuela wiht president Chávez.
Chávez was elected in 1998, he sold to the people an ideology that seemed to be, for those who believed him, the perfect way to govern. Equality between social classes, a good economic situation, a development of the country. All these things seem to be good for the country, but all the things that he promised, they were only promises.
With this government, Venezuela is now a totally different country that it was 11 years ago. The venezuelan citizens are living an extremly difficult situation with kidnapping, murders, robberies, violence. The social classes are very marked and this causes resentment, envy and violent envioronment from the poor to the rich.
Chávez has the control of all the country, like, institutions, assemblies, courts, etc; this means that we are living a communism guise of democracy.
It is amazing to believe that, there are still people who because of their level of ignorance, believe and trust in what Chávez says and promises.

The "Democratic Mask" of Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias is well supported because he has won all the elections that had been called, but the reality is completely different for all of us,the venezuelans that every day have to wake up to work for a salary that,as time goes by,it unables to buy one less product than yesterday,to see how our right of speech is muzzled by the well-kwnown Gag-law,to see how the families are killed in life every day by the violence, angry and lack of tolerance between "brothers",to see all the public power in hands of the devil itself, and to see how a "mediocre animal" make jokes from the necessities of a country that is tired of being crushed by the abuse of power, tired of being starving and sick, and with the moral and the dignity in the dust.

  125. At the eyes of the world, our president Hugo Chavez is hidden behind a democratic ruler’s disguise… Until now. Only the people who have lived this reality day by day are the ones who really know what’s going on here in Venezuela.
Since the beginning, our president began to get more and more power with every day that passed, to the point that nowadays he can even shut down any company he wants whenever he wants to, and, whatever the reason is, no one can do anything about it, because he's got the total control of the nation. For example, if he thinks that he has a better use for a mall or a supermarket, he just shuts it down! Without caring about the people who works there and the families affected.
But still, at the eyes of the world, he hasn't been established as a dictator yet. What else does he need to do?
And I’m just mentioning one of the many horrible things he has done to our country. He had closed TV channels, radio stations, private companies and more.
Everything is getting worse day by day.

  127. Nowadays, it is difficult to believe that our country is passing through a political transformation that goes against the political ideology of his population. Our “Political Leader” became elected on 1998, after a magnificent speech that made us believe in a prosperous future for our nation. But today, is way different…
People are hungry, are sad and scared… our nation had became one of the most dangerous countries on the world… So, Where is the security? People have to still, and murder to eat… Where is the money from the petroleum?
Come on this is not the country that we vote for… this is his country… He does what he wants to do… He imposed the socialism because he wanted… so where is the democracy?

  128. Venezuela does not have an outright dictatorship, but is experiencing a situation of uncertainty and that the president has acquired such power over the institutions of the country that practically do what he decides, freedom of expression has been seriously threatened by the closure of channels TV and radio that the president has authorized.

The whole world has seen many of those governors who govern begin discreetly, with a mask of democracy, but they really hide all the evil of want to make a dictatorship regime. In Venezuela we have seen all the changes that are in the country since the current President, Hugo Chavez is ruling on Venezuela, 11 years ago.

Chavez began infiltrating in the minds of people with low incomes and who doesn't have much knowledge or education, many of these individuals have given their support, but with the time that Chavez has been taking away another things, of way they want to control everything, many of the people who supported him in the past, are now against his dictatorship. He tries to take over everything, so that we may control, in all areas. It happened as time has gone by removing more and more things that were already used to, when we lived in a democracy, now lacking its dictatorship, but is hidden behind a mask and never assume what is happening in the country.
